What's under a Wills patio

Why Will isn't the cheapest: this is his own five-step method, including the bits you'll never see.

Dig deep enough

The finished patio sits at least 150mm below your damp course, so the dig goes down a minimum of 300mm below it.

Build in a fall

A fall of 1 in 60 so water doesn't collect in pools on the finished patio. Across a 3m patio that's 50mm. (Drawn steeper here so you can see it.)

A solid base

Six parts all-in ballast to one part cement, 75mm deep, levelled and tamped down.

A full mortar bed

Six parts sharp sand to one of cement, under the whole slab. Some contractors only put mortar under the corners.

Corners only: the middle of each slab isn't supported.

Laid to the line

String lines set the length, width and fall. Each slab is tapped down with a rubber mallet and checked with a spirit level, then left 24 hours to harden.

Pointed, then left alone

Joints pointed with three parts soft sand to one of cement. Then keep off it for a couple of days. That's it.

Where we've worked

    Will

Will Neales learned the trade working for an established local landscaping firm, then set up on his own in April 2004. The business grew through local advertising, networking and word-of-mouth recommendations from existing customers.

“I love discussing ideas with people and what they would like to achieve. In this way, projects go smoothly from start to finish.”
    Will Neales

He's honest about price, too. Wills Landscaping isn't the cheapest landscaper around Portishead. If cheap is what you're after, Will's happy to pass your details on to someone who is.

If at any time you're not completely happy with anything, for any reason whatsoever, we'll re-work it until everything is to your liking. No conditions, no exceptions.
